Shell begins field trial of cosine-Condi water sensors at Europe’s largest hydrogen plant

Shell and one of its subcontractors, Versteden have begun testing advanced moisture sensors developed by Condi Food, a spin-off of cosine, in the Holland Hydrogen 1 plant. This marks a key step in bringing real-time pipe monitoring into the field.

This is a real-world deployment of the cosine-Condi system, with the test pipe fully installed in the second quarter of 2025. The field trial is taking place in a small section of composite pipe at Holland Hydrogen 1. The facility, currently under construction in Rotterdam, is set to become the largest green hydrogen plant in Europe.

Originally designed for larger pipe diameters, the sensors are now being trialed in a much tighter one-inch pipe. Despite the extreme bending, the sensors are performing well and initial results are promising. The handheld measurement tool developed by Condi has impressed with its simplicity and ease of use.

With this technology, Condi stays committed to its goal of enabling smarter, faster, and more accessible humidity monitoring for composite piping. For cosine, this fits our broader mission to develop tools that help customers retrieve the data they need, in Space and on Earth.
