Condi Food is partnering with Specim to market hyperspectral imaging (HSI) applications for ensuring the perfect taste of tomatoes.
Taste is paramount in food products, significantly influencing consumer preferences and purchasing decisions. To ensure the perfect taste of tomatoes, cosine spin-off Condi Food developed a taste determination application utilizing hyperspectral imaging technology. This innovative detection system non-destructively assesses the taste characteristics of cherry tomatoes, enabling real-time food taste inspection.
“The Specim FX17 camera enables us to detect taste characteristics at high production speeds—up to 30 tomatoes per second enabling ta total production of 60 tomatoes per second on two parallel lanes—without damaging or touching the fruit. This efficiency allows us to seamlessly integrate taste inspection into the production line without causing any disruption,” remarks Robi Nederlof, Managing Director of Condi Food.

Hyperspectral imaging for food inspection
Hyperspectral imaging is a technology already used by cosine for many applications related to Earth observation and planetary science. In parallel, it has also redefined advanced quality control, and Condi Food remains committed to leveraging cutting-edge technologies to ensure high-quality and flavorful food products.
Robi Nederlof explains, “Hyperspectral Imaging has become a critical tool for advanced quality control in the food industry. Given the challenges of producing agricultural products in greenhouses in the Netherlands and the increased import of fresh products, inspection is essential to maintain the high-quality standards expected by consumers. It allows us to determine the taste quality that remains invisible to the human eye and cannot be detected through traditional vision techniques.”
Condi Food has developed a standardized software platform that controls the cameras, acquires images, preprocesses data, applies the taste model, presents production statistics, synchronizes statistics to a customer server, and interfaces with a sorter machine. For the hyperspectral imaging in the system Condi makes uses of Specim camera’s. In a new campaign Specim markets the Condi application as a client’s use case.
